Galley Fare on Sailaway Alaska Tours – Fresh, Hearty, and Wholly Alaskan
What you eat matters—especially when you’re exploring the remote, breathtaking coastline of Alaska. At Sailaway Alaska, we believe great food is part of the adventure. Onboard S/V Sailaway, every meal is crafted fresh, thoughtfully sourced, and designed to nourish both body and spirit.
A Floating Kitchen With a Soul
You won’t find buffets, frozen trays, or institutional menus here. Our 45’ Jeanneau Sun Odyssey is equipped with a modern galley that serves as the culinary heart of the boat. Meals are prepped with care, served family-style, and designed to match the tone of your journey: cozy when it’s cool, light when it’s sunny, and celebratory when the day demands it.
Whether you’re sailing through ice-laced fjords, anchored in a still cove, or watching sea otters raft past the cockpit, food is an anchor of the experience.

Local, Seasonal, Thoughtful
We do our best to support Alaska’s local producers. When provisioning, we prioritize:
Locally caught halibut, salmon, and cod
Organic produce from Seward and Anchorage co-ops
Free-range eggs and dairy from Mat-Su Valley farms
Fresh bread from Resurrection Bay Bakery or made onboard
If you’re keen to try wild foraged goods (berries, seaweed, or spruce tips), let us know—we incorporate them when possible and safe.
The Galley in Action
S/V Sailaway’s galley includes:
Propane stove with oven
Deep sink with filtered water
Solar-powered refrigeration
Cast iron, stainless steel, and non-stick cookware
Hand-cranked coffee grinder, French press, pour-over
Compact pantry loaded with spices, oils, and staples
There’s enough room for guests to help cook if they wish—but most simply enjoy the aromas and the results.
Dietary Preferences & Restrictions
Our trips are private, which means your meals are just for your group. That lets us cater thoughtfully to:
Vegetarian and vegan diets, Gluten-free or low-carb plans
Allergy-aware cooking (nuts, dairy, shellfish, etc.)
High-protein meal plans for athletes or hikers
Kids’ preferences—yes, we can do mac & cheese and pancakes too
Before departure, we’ll send you a detailed questionnaire to capture all preferences. Once onboard, you’ll never have to “make do”—your meals are designed for you.
Cooking While Cruising: What Makes It Special
Cooking on a sailboat is different. It’s slower, more deliberate, and more connected to place. When the smell of garlic hits the air as you pass beneath snow-capped peaks, you’re not just getting fed—you’re creating a memory.
Meals become rituals:
Passing around warm mugs in the cockpit at sunrise, sharing cheese boards while whales breach nearby
Listening to waves lap the hull while dinner bubbles on the stove. Watching the sky change color while finishing dessert by lantern light
Sustainability in the Galley
We carry the same eco-conscious philosophy in our kitchen as we do on deck:
Reusable packaging and containers
Composting organic waste where possible
Locally sourced food with minimal air miles
Zero single-use plastics
Ocean-safe dish soap and cleaners
Refillable filtered water bottles for all guests
We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact so this wild coastline stays wild.
What to Expect Each Day
Morning:
Hot drinks served at sunrise. Light or hearty breakfast depending on the day’s plan.
Midday:
Sit-down lunch or on-the-go wraps if underway. We stop to eat whenever possible for a relaxed pace.
Evening:
Dinner served on deck or in the saloon. Dessert and drinks follow. If anchored near a beach, we sometimes dine ashore.
Snacks, drinks, and fruit are available all day. Guests never go hungry.
-
Absolutely. You’re welcome to bring favorite items, especially specialty beverages, wines, or treats. We have cold storage and dry space. Just let us know what you’re bringing so we can plan around it.
-
Yes. We routinely prepare meals for gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, and allergy-sensitive diets. You’ll complete a detailed dietary form before the trip, and our provisioning will reflect it. We take this seriously—your comfort and safety come first.
-
We build meals around your day’s schedule, not the other way around. If you’re kayaking late or sleeping in, we adjust. That said, we try to keep meals roughly consistent so your body stays fueled for adventure.
-
Yes, if you’d like. Many guests enjoy pitching in, sharing recipes, or learning boat-cooking tips. If not, that’s fine too. You’re here to relax—we’ve got it handled.
-
Yes, and with enthusiasm. If you reel in a salmon or halibut, we’ll clean it, cook it, and serve it however you’d like: grilled, pan-seared, chowder, or even ceviche if it’s fresh enough.
Reserve Your Spot – And Save Room for Dessert
Food is more than fuel. It’s memory. It’s hospitality. It’s joy.
